Dubai has a reputation as an expensive destination. That reputation is half-true: luxury hotels and brunches genuinely are world-class expensive. But the city itself can be enjoyed for surprisingly little if you know where to look.

Transport — use the metro

Dubai Metro is clean, air-conditioned, runs from 5am to midnight (later on weekends) and a single ticket costs around AED 6. A weekly silver Nol card with unlimited zones costs AED 110. From the airport to Downtown is around AED 8.

Free attractions worth seeing

  • Dubai Fountain: 27-minute show every 30 minutes after 6 pm.
  • The Bastakiya quarter: walk the old wind-tower district for free.
  • Jumeirah Public Beach: free parking, free entry, view of Burj Al Arab.
  • Spice and Gold Souks: wandering is free; bargain for tasters at the spice stalls.
  • Mall of the Emirates ski-slope window: watch skiers from the food court.

Cheap eats

Skip Dubai Mall food courts. Instead try:

  • Ravi Restaurant (multiple branches): Pakistani comfort food, mains AED 10–20.
  • Karak chai stalls (Al Ras and Al Karama): AED 1 for a cup.
  • Bu Qtair fish restaurant (Jumeirah): fresh fish grilled at AED 35.
  • Al Mallah (Al Diyafah Street): shawarma and fresh juice for under AED 25.
